FAQ - Pedicures

What should I know before getting a pedicure?

Before you book a pedicure appointment, it’s important to follow some precautionary tips. Here’s what you need to know before a pedicure. To avoid infection, don’t schedule an appointment if you have any type of wound on your foot where bacteria can enter. For the same reason, it is a good idea not to shave your legs prior to an appointment in case of a possible nick or cut.

It is important to make sure the salon is clean and follows strict sanitation procedures. It is also important to visit the salon first and observe if their foot baths and tools are properly cleaned. Finally, be sure to request that no sharp instruments be used to remove calluses or to trim your cuticles. Again, this can result in an abrasion and possible infection. To find out more about safe pedicure tips, visit Advanced Foot and Ankle Center, Inc. in Newark, Glasgow, or Wilmington, DE, or call 302-623-4250 and ask for Dr. Raymond A. DiPretoro, Jr.

Should I bring my personal pedicure tools to the salon?

The short answer: yes. Tools that haven’t been properly sanitized can carry germs, bacteria, and fungus from a previous user and spread it to you. If you bring your own personal pedicure tools, however, the risk of picking up somebody else’s fungal toenails or athlete’s foot is greatly reduced. A reputable spa will be happy to use them for you.

If you don’t have your own tools, make sure you choose a safe, clean spa that uses an autoclave to sterilize all its equipment between every use—soapy water absolutely will not cut it. If you don’t know their procedures, don’t be afraid to ask. If they don’t want to tell you, you don’t want to go to that salon—simple as that.
